The golden rule of gorgeous typography: Use handwriting fonts sparingly

Squarespace has many beautiful handwriting fonts in the library, so it’s easier to get carried away! If you liked one of the fonts from our collection, here is a tip: use it sparingly to add little touches and embellishments. Handwriting fonts are often difficult to read and can easily take away from the overall design. However, when used in the right way, they can be a great way to add a personalized touch to your work. For example, you can use handwriting fonts to emphasize important words in a headline or to add an extra sprinkling to a logo.

But remember: less is more when it comes to handwriting fonts. Only use them when it adds something special to your design, and keep the rest of your typography clean and easy to read, as too much handwriting can quickly become overwhelming.

Stick to one font, and use it only for select pieces of text. It's also important to make sure the text size is large enough to be legible. Consider the context in which you're using the font. If it's being used to convey a message, make sure the font still allows your message to be read clearly. If you follow this rule, you'll end up with the perfect mix of classy and creative.

How to upload a custom script font to your website

If you have a particular font that you would like to use on your website and it is not part of Squarespace's font library, you can do it too. Squarespace Fall 2025 updates allowed users to upload fonts directly and use them without any workarounds. This is good news, because previously we had to use CSS and some magic tricks. Here’s how you do it:

  1. In your Squarespace dashboard, go to Design → Site Styles → Fonts.

  2. Find any font-setting dropdown (for Headings, Paragraphs, Buttons, etc). In the font list, you’ll now see an Upload icon. Click it.

  3. Choose and upload your font files (supported types include .otf, .ttf, .woff, .woff2).

  4. Once uploaded, the font appears under “Uploaded” in the font picker and can be applied like any other font.

Be sure your font usage is legal

Before uploading and using a custom font, check that you have the proper license for web usage. Fonts are intellectual property, and each typeface may have specific terms for how it can be used (web embedding, number of page views or sites, logo vs body text, etc).

TL;DR: ensure you’ve purchased or have rights to the font, the license covers web use (and possibly embedding or uploading), and you’re using it within those terms.

We hope this tutorial will help you add a nice script font to your website!
